Painting gloves

I was lucky enough to pick up a couple of pairs of original 80's zip backed leather gloves on eBay last week. The black ones especially look very similar to the ones auctioned at Bonhams last year, so should pass off well on the costume

Should I prime these before painting them silver or is it ok to go straight ahead with the colour? I'm only planning to put on as thin a coat as necessary to avoid too much paint cracking.
